He's actually a reanimated corpse of a Klump. Though DK killed him the first time, he came back as a jiang-shi (Chinese word for a zombie/vampire -- hence the sutra/talisman on his helmet) and now is basically a new terrifying enemy all its own, way stronger than a normal Klump and much more deadly.
