EDIT- There, he's colored. Blarg. Too much time. XP
Right, this is an Amethyst Dragon, from D&D. At least, this is my attempt at a design for it.
It's based on the 2nd Edition design, only with my spike obsession apparant. I think I went overboard, but thet DO say in the book that they're covered in crystal-like scales...naw, I went overboard. >_>
I did this because I think the 3rd Edition designs for ALL the Gem Dragons are damned ugly. They really, really are. Not to say this one or the 2nd Editions are high art, either, but...fugly dragons are Fugly.
I don't know if I'll color it or not. I sorta like it like this.
I probably will, though. Later.

Amethyst dragons.... those were the purple ones who spit exploding lozenges, right?
Yeah, I agree, the 3rd edition gem dragons are just downright eyesores. Granted, the only 3rd edition dragon design I have even the slightest bit of praise for is the brass, but even by its own standards, something went HORRIBLY wrong with the gem dragons.
I personally love the 2nd edition designs. There's so much variety! This is a pretty nifty take on it. Rather miss the short neck, but at least it has some muscle to go with its bulk. The face is interestingly designed as well. It feels very similar to the 2nd edition design.

Yep, exploding lozenges and...something else. Concussive force, I think?
I like that breath weapon.
I enjoyed most of the other 3rd dragon designs (except when it comes to the tiny ass feet) with the Copper as my favorite, though I couldn't say why. I like the wings, mostly.
But those Gem dragons...ugg. Nothing good about them as far as I'm concerned.
I can see why you don't like them much, though. The 2nds are much more varied and interesting.
Glad you think this one hits close! I concider that high praise from you.
I just couldn't do the short neck, though. I have some weird compulsion to draw curved necks. XD

The gem dragons were odd in 3rd edtion...they looked more like demonic elementals than dragons, Sapphire being the worst of the lot. This one though, its very easy on the eyes and is undoubtedly a dragon. Could have maybe used a more unique horn or crest though, thats largely how you tell all the types appart. I don't mind the gem spikes so much, amethyst forms cylinders like that naturally. Gregole's lament about the shorter neck is understandable. Amethyst dragons to my knowledge are earth element dragons. They spend a lot of time underground so a stockier neck is probably better for them than a sinous neck. Probably makes it easier to fire the lozenges too. It is muscular though so its a decent substitute. Anyway, great good Scatha.

It's not that I don't like society, It's that I've been forced to live out side of it due to the over whelming force of: conservatives, conformists, liberals, republicans, democrats, enviromentalists, terrorists, right wingers, religous zealots, media...
Yeah, the 3rd Editions were just...odd looking and ugly. I can hardly stand to look at them. XD
The head on this one is basicly directly from the 2nd Ed. The Gem dragons seem to be more dependant on the shape of the face itself for direct identification than the horn shapes. They have some awesome looking faces on the 2nds.
And it's the Sapphire and to an extent the Emerald who live underground-Amethysts live by mountain lakes, sometimes in caves under them.
